This summer we decided to do something that is out of character for our family…we went to the beach! Now I know many, many people head to the beach in the summertime, but somehow through all these years, we’d never done the quintessential beach getaway. My partner in crime (aka my bestie who lives next door) and I put the trip together and off we went!…………………It was an easy decision choosing where to go…Ocean City, Maryland is THE beach around here. It has a vibrant boardwalk, tons of places to stay and plenty of sandy (life guard patrolled) beaches. The plus is that it’s only about 2 1/2 hours from us (without traffic). The place we booked required us to bring our own towels, linens and paper products. Apparently this means that I must pack enough to totally fill the entire back of the hubby’s car. Did I mention we were only going for 3 nights! Haha!
After we made it through the traffic, over the bridge and with only one stop for a car sick kid (#forgotthedramamine), we made it what we will now on refer to as the “hobbit hole”. Not even kidding…this place was T.I.N.Y!! Talk about all up in each other’s business! It’s a darn good thing we left two of our kids at home, or someone would have had to sleep standing up in the itty-bitty shower or in the car. LOL!
The only thing our small, old, dirty place had going for it was the location. We really couldn’t beat the proximity to the boardwalk and beach. Basically a block and a half and we were there.
First day/night there we found a tasty pizza place, walked around the boardwalk, ate fro-yo and played in the waves…
After a rough night (for me and the kids…noisy neighbors, annoying sleeping bags and a hungry 8 year old at 4 a.m.), I stayed behind to get a few hours of sleep. Everyone else headed to the beach. They had a great time but it seems sunscreen was an afterthought! LOL! Nick snuck an afternoon nap in and the for dinner we managed to use the teeny-tiny oven to make a tasty meal and afterward we hit the boardwalk again. We strolled the other side and ate ice cream (I suspect you’ll see the theme here!). A round of showers to rid ourselves of sand and off to bed we went!
Day 3 found us back at the beach…under a rented umbrella this time! All four kids used their boogie boards and built sandcastles and got even more sunburned…Seriously…huge mom fail here. It seems I should have reapplied sunscreen, like, every 15 minutes! Live and learn…I’ll do better next time. I’ll blame it on the fact that this book had me distracted…such a creepy premise. Can’t wait to do a complete review at the end of the month! Speaking of book reviews, look here for all of mine! Dinner was lasagna and dessert…well, I bet you can guess…ice cream! Tonight took us to Dumsters for milkshakes and soft serve cones. After we were adequately sugared up we took some time to watch a few of the boardwalk performers and ride the ferris wheel…well everyone rode the ferris wheel but me…I’m not a fan! 🙂 Because Nick had an early work meeting we packed up and left late instead of having to get up at the crack of dawn to head home. We had an easy ride home…no puking kid this time (yay for finding Dramamine at a boardwalk shop!) and soon enough everyone was crashed out in their beds. I’m happy to report that the kids slept until almost 11 the next morning.
We had such a good time at the beach and can’t wait to do it again next year…only I think we’ll stay in a different place! LOL!
