When I was poking around on Facebook a company popped up that I’d not heard of before. Kids on 45th sells boxes of previously owned kids clothes. Knowing my hate/hate relationship with shopping for my children’s clothing, I thought I’d give it a try.
kids on 45th
Kids on 45th makes it pretty simple to get started. You answer a few quick questions regarding style, color, etc. and then just choose how many you want of each type…5 short sleeve tops, 3 dresses, 2 pairs of shorts, etc. I’m not sure if there’s a max number that can be included in each order but included in our first box were 6 tops and 7 bottoms.
I signed Sofia up first and chose a random assortment of short sleeve tops, pants, shorts and skorts. Here’s what we ended up with and my thoughts…
quality and brands
Overall the quality was pretty good. None of the items arrived with stains or rips. Now was everything neatly pressed, looking fresh? no way. I would say that the items looked just like what you would expect from a middle of the road consignment shop…better than a thrift store, Not near as nice as new. As for brands…there was Justice, Abercrombie & Fitch, Gymboree, Adidas among other lesser known companies.
sizing was inconsistent
Of course we all know that sizing between brands of clothing can be inconsistent for sure, but I would have thought the stylists at Kids on 45th, would have taken a closer look at each item to see if it fell within the average range for say a size 10. Especially with the idea that used clothes may have either shrunk or stretched out.
styles
For the most part the styles were totally current. I think my only issue stemmed from the fact that this t-shirt was included in our box…
Hannah Montana??? really?? what year is this!?!? When I asked Sofia if she knew who the girl on the shirt was she looked totally blank. Of course she had no clue! Hannah Montana was popular from 2006-2011. Sofia wasn’t even born when this show started and was only 4 when it went off the air. I think Sofia only knows Miley Cyrus from her bald-head/creepy tongue ring phase. #whatwasshesmoking? Obviously this top went straight into the donation bin. 🙂
Besides the Hannah Montana top, a too-small/too babyish/lame flower, gymboree shirt and a huge, never gonna fit, pair of leggings went away as well.
my final thoughts
Ultimately I think this was a good way to get decent play clothes. I’m not sure I’d trust it for fancier occasions but if you need/want clothes that you don’t care if your kids get dirty in or trash all together then Kids on 45th might be worth a try for you. As far as the prices…My total came to $34.78 which means each item averaged just $2.68 each. If I take out the 3 unusable items that still only brings each item to just 3.48 a piece…not too shabby for some name brand clothes.
so, what do you think? Do you think Kids on 45th is worth trying?
