How to do a Massive Closet Cleanout in one Day!

March 14, 2018 by Tina Anthis

Over the past year I’ve lost a fair amount of weight and I realized my closet is full of things that no longer fit. I kept having to dig for the few things I have that fit properly…it was time for a Massive Closet Cleanout! Here’s how to do it in just one day…It can be overwhelming to think of dealing with so many pieces of clothing (and shoes and purses and jackets and hats and accessories!) in one day but it can be done! Start here…

  • Gather EVERY single clothing you own in one spot. This includes the closet, all the shelves, buckets and dressers.
  • Make sure all the laundry is done so that the only items that don’t make it into your huge pile are the couple of items you are actually wearing.
  • Don’t forget outwear and underwear!
  • Here’s a few of my before pictures…

What a mess right?? After emptying the closet and dresser….this is what I had to deal with…

After taking a big deep breath and downing a couple of these…

I dug in! A few tips for managing this process…

  • Try to have an empty house, this will minimize distractions
  • Have PLENTY of plastic bags available
  • If you itemize your taxes, keep a tally of the various items. Date it and keep it with your donation receipt
  • Play some fun music!
  • Put your hands on every single item to evaluate it’s condition, size, style, etc.
  • Try things on as needed
  • Immediately put the “no’s” in the bags, don’t second guess! Just let them go
  • Try to work as steadily as possible. I’ve found that taking breaks makes me not want to keep going!
  • Be brutally honest when it comes to shoes, and other accessories. If you don’t wear it…get rid of it!

When all was said and done, this is what I was left with!

I keep my tanks and camis in that pink box. Necklaces are hung so I can see them easily. I hang my bras rather than cram them into a drawer. Kid sized velvet hangers keep them from sliding off. To make everything look uniform, I prefer the look of matching hangers. I don’t know about you, but when things are clean and tidy and organized, I feel like I can breathe easier. A place for everything and everything in it’s place! 🙂 Some day I’d like to paint my closet a pale pink, add some better lighting and hang a full length mirror.

Want to see what left my house and went straight to Goodwill??…

10 FULL BAGS!!!!! 🙂

I was inspired after finishing my clothes and went on to tackle Nicks stuff as well! Before….

and after…

It was a challenge to take on all of our clothes (and everything else!) in one day but it was totally worth it! I can’t tell you how awesome it to walk into our closet and see how organized it is. When things are clean and tidy I’m inspired to keep it that way. Plus now I know exactly what I need to focus my shopping needs on (shorts! short sleeve tops! P.J. pants! Tank Tops!).

If your closet is driving you crazy…if you can’t find something to wear despite having 100’s of items to choose from…if your necklaces are tangled and you can’t find shoes that match…it might be time for a one day closet cleanout! Good Luck!

Before you go…take a look at my closet cleanout buddy!
