Between traveling and trying to get into the school year routine, I feel like I barely picked up a book this month! Here are the reviews on the books I did manage to read during September……………………………………………………..Palisades Park by Alan Brennert— I see on Goodreads that I rated this four stars. But as I’m sitting here trying to write the review I realize I don’t remember much about it other than it takes place over a number of decades at a place called Palisades Park in New Jersey. The main character is a dare devil from birth and is captivated by the high divers at the park where her parents work the consession stands. She eventually becomes a high diver. There were ups and downs with her parents, including that her mother up and left the entire family to run off with some carnival guy. It seems the reader was supposed to feel sorry for the mother since she felt trapped in her domestic everyday life…oh wah…cry me a river! Anyway, the history was interesting but the characters were pretty blah. In hind sight I will give this one just 3 stars.
Lying in Wait by: Liz Nugent— I kept thinking I’d read something else by this author but when I review my reading list I’m not seeing anything. I think I picked this one up because I thought I recognized the author. This book shows us a family with some wicked secrets. I mean it starts off with the husband killing a young woman…well almost killing her. He panics and his wife steps in a finishes the job. Nice. Honestly it was pretty boring. I powered through thinking it would get better but it never really did. After the initial adrenile rush of the opening it falters and eventually fails. But it wasn’t all terrible. It took place in Dublin Ireland, which is a place I’ve actually been so it was fun to read about places I’d visited or eaten at. I’ll give it 2 1/2 stars.
The Good Twin by: Marti Green– Blah, blah, ,blah….I pretty much hated every character in this book. It’s about a set of twins who didn’t know the other existed until the husband of one figures it out and contracts with the newly found twin to take over his wifes place after he off’s her. Of course there are “twists and turns”, (which were easily figured out) and no one seems like who they are portrayed to be. Ending was LAME…tied up a neat little bow with a darling “happily ever after” ending. Everyone should have gone to jail in this book. Seriously…avoid this one! ZERO stars
Beautiful Lies by: Lisa Unger– I got tired of the main two character quite quickly. They meet fall into bed pretty much instantly and then it comes out that he’s targeted her for a reason…to help him figure out what happened to him when he was young. They start to unravel the past while somehow avoiding the police and evading trained killers….except how is that even possible?? She’s a free lance writer and he’s a metal artist. I’m sure they’ve both had extensive martial arts and military style combat training (can you sense my sarcasm on this one?? 😉 ) There were many times I thought I’d just set this one down and not finish but I really didn’t have any better options so I perservered and made it to the ending. I can’t totally bash this one as the writing style was pretty good so I’ll give it 3 1/2 stars
Well, that’s it for my September book review…short and sweet! Hopefully I’ll have some really great books to review for October. I have one on my nightstand that I can’t wait to crack open!
